| In conjunction with the Golden
Spike Days festival, the Old Mill Boathouse celebrated its official
opening on Monday, July 1, 2002, concluding a weekend of fun and celebration.
Although the Canada Day Weekend lived up to its reputation of 'less than perfect' summer weather, spirits could not be dampened and hundreds of local residents came down for a look around the boathouse. |

| While the crowds were lighter
on Saturday, many visitors were welcomed with information about the
boathouse (NO, Its NOT a restaurant....), and the various clubs that
call the facility 'home'. Sunday brought much larger crowds, and an
exhibition of beautiful handmade wooden kayaks by local wooden boat
builder Rod Tait from Orca Boats - now located on Murray Street, just
around the corner. These kayaks are the backdrop for the pictures shown
on the website, and are truly magnificant craft. Also on Sunday was the Old Mill Boathouse 'Balloon-in-the-kayak' toss, which proved to be a hit with everyone ! While most of the contestants were youngsters - taking home an inflatable whale/water toy and a super slider ball toss game - we did finally manage to find two 'adult' contestants able to get the water balloon in the kayak to win an Old Mill Birdhouse and a folding patio/beach chair ! Congratulations to our winners and a thank you to Rocky Point Kayak, boatingbc.com and the members of the Port Moody Rowing Clubs for all of their support. (Look for a wetter, and wilder version of this coming next year !!!) Monday brought the official opening ceremonies - kicking off with a thundering rendition of Oh Canada by Barry Rector, a blessing by Rev. David Spence, and welcomes, well-wishes and thank yous from Ron Reichelt , City of Port Moody , Joe Trasolini, Mayor, Christy Clark, MLA and Deputy Premier , and Gordon Clay, President, Old Mill Boathouse society. The ceremonies were followed by snacks and refreshments served in the great room. The 2002 Golden Spike Days fund raising raffle was held at 4:00 - with the first name drawn being that of Mayor Joe Trasolini - so we expect to see Joe out on the water in a rowing shell sometime soon ?? The members of the Old Mill Boathouse wish to extend their thanks to all of the sponsors - corporate sponsors, tile sponsors, raffle ticket purchasers - all of you who have helped to make this dream a reality. |
